Post Holing

Post holing or a posthole is when you take a step on snow pack breaking through the crust and sinking into the snow, giving your leg the look and feel of a post in a hole. The best defense against this is to choose hard pack snow when possible as opposed to soft or “rotten” snow, wear gaiters on trails where it might happen and if possible, wear snowshoes when necessary while hiking extensively through softer snow.
